Division Achievements
Congratulations to Dr. Dimitrios Oreopoulos, Professor of Medicine at Toronto Western Hospital, who was named the 2010 International Distinguished Medalist in recognition of his work in educating physicians, enhancing the lives of dialysis patients and advancing the mission of the NKF around the globe.
Dr. Oreopoulos has devoted his career to improving patient outcomes and enhancing available treatments, specifically through his extensive work in the Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) field. In addition to mentoring over 100 Nephrologists from around the world, Dr. Oreopoulos developed the Toronto Western Hospital technique for Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), which substantially decreased the peritonitis rate and extensively increased the use of CAPD treatment in the U.S. and worldwide. He founded, and edited for the last two decades, the Peritoneal Dialysis Bulletin that subsequently became the official journal of the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis. His work in introducing amino-acids containing PD solutions was a breakthrough in the treatment of malnourished PD patients.
In addition to his work in the area of PD, Dr. Oreopoulos is the founder of the International Society of Geriatric Nephrology and the International Nephrology and Urology Journal. Recently, he chaired the ASN’s Geriatric Nephrology Committee and was elected to chair the first ASN Advisory Board on Geriatric Nephrology.
Congratulations are in order for Dr. Sheldon Tobe (Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology) who was recently honoured with the 2009 Ambulatory Community Medicine (ACE) Teaching Award.
The annual ACE award, established in 2006, acknowledges the outstanding contributions of a member of the ACE teaching faculty. Students nominate the candidates for this award, making it especially gratifying for the recipients. Dr. Tobe's students commended his “mastery in teaching, his encouragement of critical thinking, and his commitment to being a mentor and role model, one who is accessible and genuinely interested in their well being and development.”
